5 Writing Prompts to Get Your Writing Started
by Tabby Biddle
Sitting down and getting started writing can be one of life’s greatest challenges for a writer. You show up to the paper (or the screen) and feel awkward, stiff and unsure of yourself. Self-doubt creeps in. What am I going to write today? Is anyone even going to care? And…how am I going to start?
I’ve certainly been there!
What I have found to be supportive in my writing practice, and supportive to my clients and students over the years, is to start with a prompt. A prompt takes the pressure off of you having to come up with something unique or clever to begin your writing. With a prompt, you can just show up and see what unfolds from there. I think the creative unfolding is one of the great gifts of writing. This is the Feminine at work.
So, if you are in need of some extra “umph” to help you show up to the page, here are five writing prompts I suggest you try. You can try a different one each day this week.
5 Writing Prompts to Get Your Writing Started
1. What I really want to write about is…
Set your timer for 2 minutes and write freely, filling in this thought. If the timer dings and you still want to keep writing in this flow, then go for it!
2. I’m really scared to write about…
This prompt can be extremely revealing and is a superstar in unlocking your voice. Set your timer for 2 minutes and try it!
3. What’s ALIVE in me Right now is…
This can help you express exactly where you are right now. It will help you connect with your body and your emotions, and help you listen with more awareness to your inner voice, which is where so much of your wisdom resides.
4. I am yearning to talk about…
This is a good one to help you be honest about what you really want to say. It will help you tap into your truest desires and come from a more authentic place in your writing.
5. If I wasn’t so scared, I would write about…
This will help you put your big girl pants on and step into the bold leader that lives within you. This one will help you be more true to your calling and use your voice in a more expansive and impactful way.
Try these out this week and let me know how it goes!
