What is Your Theme Word for 2021?

by Tabby Biddle

At the end of every year, I like to choose a theme word for the upcoming year. Instead of having a ton of new year’s resolutions that might be hard to keep track of, or hard to keep, my theme word acts as a focal point for me to stay aligned and true to my intentions for the new year.

If you’re not familiar with this ritual, here’s the scoop:

  • Choose a word that encapsulates what you want more of, what you want to focus on, or what you want to improve upon in the coming year. (It can help to think specifically about what you want MORE of in 2021.)

  • Take a moment to consider this, and write it down.

  • Instead of having a ton of new year’s resolutions that might be hard to keep track of, or hard to keep, your theme word acts as a focal point for you to stay aligned and true to your intentions for the new year.

  • Allow this word to be an anchor for your year, and consider it when making decisions about your career and personal life.

  • It can help to make a drawing or collage that visually represents the word, or simply write the word and put it in a place where you will see it on a daily basis.

  • Once you’ve chosen the word, stick with it. Your commitment to it will bring you the results you desire.*

*Exception: If you feel there is a new focus that wants to emerge partway through the year, then honor that. Your inner voice knows best.
