Women in History: Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an influential 19th-century suffragist and civil rights activist. She helped organize the first women’s rights convention in the WORLD in 1848, as well as formed the National Women’s Loyal League with Susan B. Anthony in 1863. Together, they also established the National Woman Suffrage Association.

Stanton fought for liberal divorce laws and reproductive self-determination, which led to her marginalization among women reformers later in life. Still, her work ultimately helped bring about the passage of the 19th Amendment.
