Women in History: Jeannette Rankin
Amazingly, I didn't learn about Jeannette Rankin until LAST YEAR, which is crazy because I majored in Government in college. Did you know about Jeannette Rankin? She was the first woman to hold national office in the United States when she was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives in 1916. She represented the state of Montana as a member of the Republican Party.
Dedicated to being a pacifist, Rankin was the ONLY House member to vote against the U.S. declaring war on Japan after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941.
Jeannette, I honor you today and your courage to stand up for what you believed was right, even in the face of extreme opposition to your opinion.
