Women in History: Kamala Harris
Kamala Harris is an American attorney and politician, currently serving as the junior U.S. Senator from California. When she won the 2016 U.S. Senate election, she became the second woman of color, first Indian American, and first biracial woman elected to serve in the Senate.
In her earlier career, she was recognized by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the top 100 lawyers in California. While she served as San Francisco District Attorney, she initiated a special Hate Crimes Unit, focusing on hate crimes against LGBT children and teens in schools. Following her victory in the 2016 U.S. Senate election, Harris vowed to protect immigrants from the policies of then President-elect Donald Trump, and Mother Jones magazine named Harris as one of "11 Democrats Who Could Defeat President Trump in 2020."
