Women in History: Samantha Power
Samantha Power served as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2013 to 2017. In 2016, she was named by Forbes as the 41st most powerful woman in the world.
In 2012, Obama chose her to be the chair of the newly created Atrocities Prevention Board. Her office focused on United Nations reform, women's rights and LGBT rights, religious freedom and religious minorities, refugees, human trafficking, and more. Her book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, which studies U.S. foreign policy response to genocide is the winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize.
On June 5, 2013, President Obama announced her nomination as the new United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and on August 1st, it was confirmed by an overwhelming vote by the U.S. Senate, 87 to 10.
